Elect Sojourner Marable Grimmett

With 20 years of public service,

she brings a fresh perspective to Fulton County.

Election Day is Tuesday, September 17, 2019

About Sojourner Marable Grimmett, M.A.

Candidate, Fulton County Commissioner – District 6

Sojourner, Fulton County’s next District 6 Commissioner, is offering her 20 years of experience in public service to boldly fill the seat of our late great Commissioner Emma I. Darnell, J.D. Sojourner, just like Emma, has the education and experience in Southwest Atlanta and South Fulton fighting for seniors, the youth and the disenfranchised.

As the next Fulton County Commissioner, Sojourner will work hard and tackle issues vital to constituents of the “Mighty6” District. Issues like affordable housing, economic development and job creation to senior services, youth outreach and engagement, to transportation upgrades and improving access to health care. Leading with her values of truth, compassion and community, she pledges to produce results that will create a more equitable and safer Fulton County for all residents.

Sojourner brings a compassionate, forward-thinking

and informed perspective to Fulton County Government.

Politics should refresh itself and evolve with the needs of the public. As the next Fulton County Commissioner, Sojourner offers a fresh perspective for county-wide leadership. This is demonstrated through her 20 years of professional and public service experience. Experience that has led to her building bridges of compassionate relationships across all generations, and her aspirational vision for the future of our County. She is not a career politician or candidate interested in chasing titles or looking for her next government check. Truth, compassion, and service are in her DNA – a simple Google search will uncover a rich archive of her demonstrated history of public service. Sojourner is the right woman at the right time to serve the people of Fulton County.

What is a fresh perspective?

Our campaign brings the community activists, volunteers, neighbors

and every day people - who have always worked behind the scenes of politics -

to the forefront.

Sojourner Marable Grimmett is not a career politician - she's a community activist that she has been in the background for 20 years simply getting the work done. That's the difference. Career politicians often over-promise, under-deliver, and can't get the job done - they don't succeed without people like Sojourner working diligently behind the scenes. This campaign represents a growth opportunity for everyone who is invested in changing politics for the better and impacting the community for positive, long-term gain for all. Support the person that can get the job done - Sojourner.

With a demonstrated 20-year track record of public service,

Sojourner Marable Grimmett is passionate about community.

Currently, Sojourner champions affordable senior housing with National Church Residences, which serves more than 1,200 seniors daily. Before that, she was the “go-to” woman as director of constituent services at Fulton County, serving in the Commission Chairman’s Office and in the External Affairs Office. She listened to concerns and found solutions for residents throughout Fulton. She has contributed her time and talent in the nonprofit, higher-education, local government, and senior services sectors.

Since childhood, Sojourner has been instilled with (and believes in)

solid family values and community resiliency & strength.

Born in Boulder, Colorado, Sojourner was raised by parents who instilled the values of love, pride, resiliency, education, and service to others. She is proud to be named after Sojourner Truth, the famous African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist known for bravely escaping slavery after being denied freedom post-Emancipation Proclamation.

Her father is the late Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Dr. Manning Marable, and her mother is community activist and HIV/AIDS advocate Hazel Ann Harris. Sojourner’s mom grew up in the small town of Monroe, in between Athens and Atlanta in North Georgia. She experienced the harshness of racism and oppression as a young child, but through education was able to leave a dirt road on Turner Street and attend both college and graduate school.

Sojourner’s soul would lead her back to her mother’s home state in 1997, when she enrolled in Clark Atlanta University to pursue her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass Communications with a minor in African- American Studies. She later attended graduated school at Pennsylvania State University earning a Master of Arts Degree in Media Studies. After graduate school, she returned to Atlanta and married her college sweetheart, Roland Grimmett. They are the proud parents of two smart and active young sons, Roland (12) and Joshua (9). Sojourner is a long-time resident of Southwest Atlanta, and currently lives in the beautiful City of South Fulton.
